Chintamoni Kar Bird Sanctuary, Narendrapur
December 2025
Amidst all the bustles of Kolkata, lies a piece of dense forest near Narendrapur. Earlier known as 'Kayaler Bagan' (Kayal's Garden), the area was acquired by the Govt. of West Bengal in 2005 from the private owners.
The place was initially named as "The Narendrapur Wildlife Sanctuary". Later the government renamed it to "Chintamoni Kar Bird Sanctuary" to honour the famous sculptor and Padmabhushan awardee Shri Chintamoni Kar who, along with other local people, fought to obtain the wildlife sanctuary status for the then 'Kayaler Bagan'.
The Sanctuary is about 17 acres in area and is a home for a variety of trees and birds.
